Mr. Eugene N. Hodnett, 91, of 961 Hickory Rd. Chatham, Virginia departed this life June 24, 2022 at his residence.
He was born December 8, 1930 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. He was the son of the late John Hodnett and late Odella Wright. He was also predeceased by his only acquainted son Jeffrey D. James, eleven brothers, and a sister. He was married to Audrey Hodnett, who survives.
He was a member of Hopel Chapel Baptist Church and also a member of the NAACP. Eugene was the first black police officer for the town of Chatham where he ranked as Sgt. and retired in 1994.
In addition to his wife of the residence, he leaves to cherish his memories two sons, Michael Hodnett of Chatham, Virginia and Harvey Hodnett (Georgia) of San Antonio, TX; four daughters, Juliet Woodruff of Altavista, Virginia, Marilyn Pope of Richmond, Virginia, Janett Hodnett of Fredricksburg, Virginia, and Pamela Fitzgerald (Elvis) of Chatham, Virginia; three acquainted daughters, Cynthia Chapman, Rosalyn Battle (Morris) and Angela Hanks (Terrance);ten grandchildren, sixteen great-children; two sister-in-law, Barbara Preston and Bernice Bennett, a host of devoted nieces, nephews, other family members and friends.
Funeral services will be Thursday, June 30, 2022 at 12:00 noon from the Chapel of Howerton Funeral Home. Interment will follow in Floral Hill Memory Garden, Danville, VA.
Visitation will be Wednesday, June 29, 2022 from 5-7 p.m. from the Chapel of Howerton Funeral Home.
Masks are required for all services.
