Mrs. Elma Barksdale Lanier, of 1873 Mountain Road, Java, Virginia, entered into a peaceful rest Sunday, September 22, 2024 at her residence.
She was born September 8, 1937 in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. She was the daughter of the late Rose Glass Jones. She was reared by Clarence and Addie Barksdale. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pernell Lanier.
She was a member of Shockoe Missionary Baptist Church. She was a member of the Senior choir, Missionary Society, Hospitality committee, NAACP, and founding member of 640 Rescue Squad, she was also a member of Riceville Baptist Church Gospel Chorus.
She leaves to cherish her memory; four daughters; Margie Richardson of Chatham, VA, Linda Kelly (Ty) of Danville, VA, Sandra McKenzie (Starling) of Rustburg, VA, Jennifer Stevens (David) of Columbia, S.C.; a foster son, Lee Miller of Hampton, VA; a brother, Melvin Barksdale; a sister, Ellen Barksdale Barley (Robert); seven grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Funeral services for Mrs. Lanier will be conducted on Monday, September 30, 2024 at 12:00 Noon from Shockoe Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Antonel Myler Sr., Eulogist. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Burial Park, Chatham, VA.
Visitation will be held Sunday, September, 29, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. from the Chapel of Howerton Funeral Home.
